Brand Clarity

In the first four sessions, we'll build the foundation for your messaging by defining or refining your mission, values, target market, offerings, and elevator pitch. 

At the end Phase 1, you'll know where you're coming from, what you're selling, who you're selling to, and how to talk about it.

Website Copy

Over our next four sessions, you’ll write new copy for your Home, Services, and About pages. I’ll give guidance and feedback from beginning to end so you never feel lost. 

You’ll also have access to my Website Copy 101 video training. We'll discuss the outline of each page before you write it, and I'll edit and give feedback on your drafts. 

Looking Forward

In your final two sessions, we'll discuss how to get your messaging out into the world.

We'll brainstorm marketing channels and content topics, and develop a simple plan so you can start taking action immediately.

We'll also reflect back on your accomplishments over the last 12 weeks.

+ Who is this for?

The Messaging Makeover is for service-based solo entrepreneurs who have already been in business for at least a year. It's important that you're already making money and have a strong sense of what you're selling and what kinds of clients you want to work with most.

My clients have included graphic designers, financial advisors, business consultants, personal trainers, chiropractors, information architects, marketing professionals, photographers, and many other service providers.

+ Who is this NOT for?

This process is not a good fit for product-based businesses, MLMs, or online businesses that rely on launches or complex sales funnels. It’s also not for larger businesses that require the sign-off of multiple people for messaging, content, or marketing decisions.

It's also important that you already know your business model and have a service that you're successfully selling. So if you're just starting out, or are still in experimentation mode, this isn't the right fit.

Finally, if you really hate writing, this is not for you. I’d recommend looking for a copy writer instead.

+ What's the time commitment?

You’ll have 10 weekly calls with me; each of these is 60-minutes long. Between calls, you’ll have homework assignments. Sometimes these might take you an hour, sometimes they’ll require 2-4 hours. I recommend setting aside at least a half-day each week outside of our calls. When we get to the copy writing phase, it may be even longer.

In short, you’ll be doing a lot of work. So if you have a busy time coming up (in your work or personal life) I’d recommend holding off until you can dedicate the time to get the most out of our work together.

Also, note that I've said this is a 12-week engagement. It will take only 12 weeks if you really put in the work and stay on track with our weekly meetings. This part is really up to you. If you take weeks to do each piece of homework, the process will take much longer. I cap my contracts at 6 months, so any sessions you haven't used by then will be forfeited.

+ What if I'm not a great writer?

That’s ok! We’re not trying to write the next great American novel here. We’re going to take the things you already know about your business, get them on paper, in your voice, and then edit the crap out of them until your message is clear as day.

As long as you don’t hate writing, and you’re willing to give it a try, you’ll be just fine. I’ll give plenty of guidance and support along the way so it’s not just you, alone, staring at a blank Google doc :)

Also, keep in mind this great quote from Ernest Hemingway: “The first draft of anything is shit.”

That’s why you’ll have me as your editor :)

+ Can’t I just tweak my website copy without doing all this other stuff?

I mean, you can try. In fact, you’ve probably already tried. How’d that work out for you? Here's more info on why my process goes in the order it does.

+ This seems like a lot of work. Can’t I just hire a copywriter to do all this for me?

Sure! You’re more than welcome to do that.

I developed The Messaging Makeover to be a more comprehensive approach to messaging. When I was a freelance writer, I found that if I wrote website copy for a client, they didn’t necessarily use that language throughout the rest of their business. So they still stumbled in conversations, or used different messaging in their proposals… nothing was consistent.

In my coaching work over the past few years, I’ve found that when entrepreneurs develop their own messaging and copy, it feels even more true to them so they use it much more effectively.

And just so you know, a really good copy writer will cost more than The Messaging Makeover :)

+ Are there other ways to work with you?

This is the only way! I've fine-tuned this offering over years. I found that when clients did smaller engagements with me, it didn't fully solve their messaging problems.

+ Does this include any design services?

Nope. During the website copywriting phase, I can give some formatting guidance (headings, etc.) and advise on where photos could be placed, etc. But we will not be addressing visual branding elements like logos, colors, fonts, etc.

The clients who have the most amazing outcomes work with me first, and then work with a graphic/web designer to make their website really shine.

The Messaging Makeover can be especially powerful if you’re planning a re-brand. Just make sure to do this work before any design work! It’ll make your designer’s job MUCH easier.
